Overview

You can submit online assignments and discussions in Canvas using several submission types. Your instructor can choose what kind of online submissions they want you to use. 

Resolution

Assignment Submission

1. Select the assignment that needs a submission (via the course module)
2. Click the Submit Assignment button.
3. Select submission type tab (File Upload, Google Doc, Text Entry, etc.)
4. Upload assignment.
5. Click the Submit button.
6. Wait until you see the Submission ✓Turned In! message.

Discussion Board Submission

1. Click the title of the discussion (via the course menu and/or in a module)
2. To reply to the main discussion, type your reply in the Reply field and click Post Reply.
3. To reply to a comment already posted by another student, locate the post you want to reply to and click Reply; type your response, and then click Post Reply.

Rubrics

Some instructors attach rubrics to help you understand how your posts will be graded. This guide walks you through how to view and use the rubric both before and after submitting assignment or discussion.

Viewing the Rubric Before Posting

1. Go to your course in Canvas.
2. Open the assignment or discussion by clicking on its title.
3. Look near the top or right-hand side of the page for a "Show Rubric" link or icon (sometimes under a menu with three vertical dots).
4. Click it to view the grading rubric.

Note: If you do not see a rubric, your instructor may not have attached one.

Viewing the Rubric and Feedback After Posting

1. In your course, click “Grades” in the left-hand menu.
2. Locate the assignment or discussion and click its title.
3. On the submission details page, look for a “View Rubric” button or link on the right-hand side.
4. Click it to see how you were graded for each criterion.
5. Your instructor may leave comments directly within the rubric or in the general feedback area.

• They help you self-assess your work before posting.
• Following the rubric can help improve your grade.

Troubleshooting

If you are attempting to upload a file but do not see a file upload option, your instructor may not have chosen that online submission type. Review the assignment submission details and contact the course instructor to confirm the allowed submission types.
